DIRECTV Technical Support: Setting Record Defaults 

Are you a DIRECTV customer who wants to record your favorite series on DVR?   There’s a cool feature on all the satellite TV provider’s DVRs that lets do this quickly and easily.  If you haven’t already heard about it, your friends at Signal Connect offer you this DIRECTV technical support.  (We care about you like that.)  Here’s what you have to do: You simply have to press the record button twice on a program in the guide.  That’s all there is to it.  The trick is making sure that the recording is set the way you want it.  For that, we share this handy, step-by-step guide:


The DIRECTV Genie receiver is the most popular and common residential DIRECTV DVR.  If you’re reading this and want to set your record defaults, chances are good that you’re using a Genie.  Here’s a five-step guide to make sure you’ve done everything correctly to record the series you want:

  1. Press LIST
  2. Arrow up to Manage Recordings
  3. Press SELECT
  4. Arrow to Typical Recording Preferences
  5. Press SELECT

Once you’ll get there, you’ll notice that DIRECTV gives you some options:

Set them according to your preferences then press EXIT to return to live TV.

For Pre-DIRECTV Genie DVRs

If your DIRECTV DVR is a model that came out before the Genie, then you’re operating some legacy equipment.  That’s okay, though, because we have a guide for you, too.  For pre-Genie DVRs, you’ll need to find something called “Record Defaults.”  You can do that by following these easy, five-step process:

  1. Press MENU
  2. Arrow down to Recordings
  3. Press SELECT
  4. Arrow down to Record Defaults
  5. Press SELECT

If you followed these steps correctly, you’ll see a screen that’s looks like the one above.  It controls all your new series recordings.  In this example, we chose to:

  • Record new programs
  • Keep 10 of those recorded shows
  • Don’t want anything auto-deleted unless we run out of hard drive space
  • Don’t want any extra space before or after each show

You can choose this setup or program things the way you want them.  Once done, press EXIT to go back to your live TV.

DIRECTV DVR Recordings: Before and After

Your DIRECTV equipment should let you manually add time before and after a recurring recording, though we don’t recommend it.  If your DIRECTV DVR has enough open tuners, it automatically records 30 seconds before, and 90 seconds after each recording.  This is usually enough to cover most minor clock issues.  If you sit down to watch a recording and realize you’ve missed a few minutes, rewind it and you’ll likely find that you can go back before the beginning of the recording to catch what you thought you missed.
