DIRECTV Technical Support: Reboot Receiver, Client or DVR

Do you have a new DIRECTV Genie menu on your receiver, client, or DVR?  If so, you probably don’t have to reboot it often or ever.  The new DIRECTV equipment is so reliable, that you might only need to reboot it once a year in the rare incident that you encounter minor DIRECTV problems.  The thing is, when you need to reboot your DIRECTV Genie receiver, client, or DVR, you need to know how to do it properly.  To help you do this, we offer this DIRECTV technical support.

Use the DIRECTV Red Button

If you need to reboot your system, go ahead and push that red reset button.  Yes, I know that you were told not to do this unless you had no other choice.  With the newer DIRECTV Genie equipment, you can simply press that red button to quickly and easily reboot your system.  Note: Don’t push that button for no reason, though.

DIRECTV Genie DVRs and Genie 2 (HR34 and HR44)

If you’ve had your Genie for more than five years and it’s a large box, you might have an HR34.  This and the HR44 DVRs feature a spring-loaded door on the front that opens to reveal the DIRECTV red button.  Here’s what it looks like:

You’ll find the door on the front right of the DVR.  Push it to open.


If you have an HR54 DVR, you’ll find the red button located on the side and is clearly visible.  Here’s what it looks like:

DIRECTV HS17 Genie 2

On an HS17 Genie 2, the red button is located toward the back, on the bottom of the unit.  It’s pretty big, so you shouldn’t have any problem finding it.  This is what it looks like:

All DIRECTV Genie Clients

When it comes to these clients, you’ll always find the red reset button on the right side of the device.  The image below happens to be a C31 client.  You’ll find the button in virtually the same place on the C41, C41W, C51, C61, C61W, and C61K clients.

How to Reset DIRECTV Client Boxes

Now that we’ve told you to press the red button and where to find it, it’s time to take you through the complete resetting process.  After you press the button, the client should come back up within about 90 seconds.  If that doesn’t solve the problem, push the red button on your DVR or server.  This is considered a full reboot because it disconnects all clients.  Expect this process to take up to 10 minutes to complete.  (Most are done in less than five minutes, but result times tend to vary.)  Once it’s done, you might need to reboot the clients for them to work.

Using the Menus

To do a full resent, it’s not necessary to travel through your DIRECTV menus.  The upsi9de to working through the menus is that you can do a reboot without having to leave your comfy chair, couch, or love seat.  To make that happen, follow these steps:

  1. Press the MENU button
  2. Arrow down until you reach Settings
  3. Arrow over until you find Reset Options
  4. Press the SELECT button

To reset the client, choose Restart this receiver.  To restart the server, choose Restart All Locations.  Note: You should never use the Reset to Defaults or Reset Everywhere options.  If you do, you will inadvertently erase everything you’ve recorded and make your system revert to the way it was when you first set it up.

As you come to the end of this process, you’ll get one more screen that tells you to press the DASH button (-) to the left of the zero to confirm.   Do this and you’re done!
